Montgomery County is located in central part of New York. Montgomery County has a total area of approximately 410 square miles of which 99% is land and 1% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 49,708 people, 20,038 households, and 13,104 families residing in Montgomery County, New York. Out of New York's 58 counties, it only ranks as 46th most populous. The population density of the county is 123 per square mile. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general.
